The Election Commission consolidated all Voter ID updates into a single form — Form 8 — covering corrections (name, DOB, address spelling), residence shifting, replacement of a lost EPIC, and marking yourself as a person with disability (PwD).

You access it on the Voters Service Portal. The portal fetches your existing record by EPIC number, and you only edit the fields that need to change. Upload proof matching the change you're requesting.

For address shifting across constituencies or states, the portal handles the move — but make sure you're not registered in two places simultaneously. Double registration is an electoral offence.

Common mistakes & rejection reasons

  • Submitting address shifting without deleting the old entry

Why: If you shift to a new constituency without filing to delete the old entry, you may be registered in two places — a criminal offence under election laws.

Fix: The Form 8 portal handles inter-constituency shifting automatically. Confirm that the old registration will be deleted as part of the process.

  • Using the wrong form type for your update

Why: Before the ECI unified forms, voters used different forms for different updates. Some applicants still try to use outdated forms (Form 6 for what is now Form 8).

Fix: Use Form 8 for all updates, corrections, shifting, replacement, and PwD marking. Form 6 is only for fresh registration.

  • Uploading proof that doesn't match the correction

Why: Uploading an address proof for a name correction, or vice versa, results in rejection because the proof type doesn't match the change.

Fix: Match the proof to the correction: name correction → Aadhaar / PAN with correct name; address shifting → utility bill / rent agreement at new address.

  • Not tracking the Form 8 reference number

Why: Without the reference number, you cannot track the status of your update request.

Fix: Note the reference number at the time of submission. Check status on the Voters Service Portal.

  • Assuming the updated EPIC is dispatched immediately

Why: Physical EPIC cards take time to print and dispatch. Many applicants wait at their old address without tracking delivery.

Fix: Download the e-EPIC from the portal as soon as it's available. The physical card follows by post — track using the reference number.

Special situations

Inter-state address shifting

Shifting voter registration across states requires deletion from the old state's roll and fresh registration in the new state. Form 8 handles intra-state shifting; for inter-state moves, you may need to file Form 7 (deletion) in the old state and Form 6 (fresh registration) in the new state.

Name correction where Aadhaar and old EPIC have different name spellings

Submit the Aadhaar showing the correct name as proof. The ERO will update the EPIC to match the Aadhaar name. Both documents will then be consistent.

PwD (Person with Disability) voter requesting marking

Marking as PwD on the electoral roll enables access to doorstep voting and other ECI-provided accessibility measures. A disability certificate from a competent authority is required.

Voter ID lost and requesting replacement

Use Form 8 with 'Replacement of EPIC' option. The same EPIC number is retained on the new card. No FIR is required for a lost EPIC.

Photo on EPIC is very outdated (taken 10+ years ago)

A photo update requires a recent passport-size photo. Submit via Form 8 with 'Correction in entries' and upload the new photo. The BLO may or may not visit for a photo change.

Frequently asked questions

Will my EPIC number change after an update?

Usually no — the EPIC number stays the same. For inter-state shifting or replacement, a new EPIC may be issued.

How do I update my address to a different constituency?

Use Form 8 with 'Shifting of Residence' option. The Election Commission handles the inter-constituency move.

I lost my Voter ID. Can I get a new one?

Yes. Use Form 8 with 'Replacement of EPIC' option. You'll get a new card with the same number.

Can I link my Aadhaar to my Voter ID through this form?

Aadhaar-Voter linking is a separate flow on the Voters Service Portal. It's voluntary and helps clean up duplicate enrolments.

How long does a Voter ID update take?

After ERO approval, the updated EPIC can be downloaded from the portal. The physical card is dispatched by post — timeline varies by constituency.

What if my BLO never visits for address shifting verification?

Track the reference number status. If BLO verification is overdue, contact your district Election Office. The BLO may have marked it verified remotely in some cases.

Can I update my Voter ID photo online?

Yes. Use Form 8 with 'Correction in entries' and upload a new passport-size photo on the Voters Service Portal.

What is an e-EPIC?

e-EPIC is the digital version of your Elector's Photo Identity Card — a PDF that can be downloaded from the Voters Service Portal. It is legally valid for voter identification.

Can I change my mobile number linked to Voter ID?

Mobile number updates for the Voters Service Portal login can be done through your account settings. The mobile number is used for your portal account, not printed on the EPIC.

Can I update my Voter ID offline?

Yes. Visit your district Election Office or Tehsildar Office to submit Form 8 in person. Carry the proof documents and your existing EPIC.

What happens to my voting eligibility during the update process?

Your existing entry remains active during the update process. You can vote with your old EPIC until the updated one is issued.

Is a police complaint (FIR) needed for a lost Voter ID?

No. Unlike a passport, an FIR is not required for a lost EPIC. Simply apply for replacement using Form 8.

Can I update Voter ID details if it is a very old card with no EPIC number visible?

Very old Voter ID cards may have a different format. Search your name on nvsp.in or voters.eci.gov.in using your name and DOB to find your EPIC number, then proceed with Form 8.

Will I be able to vote in the upcoming election while my update is being processed?

Yes, if your name was already on the electoral roll before the revision cutoff. You can vote with your old EPIC while the update is processing.

What is the difference between Form 6 and Form 8?

Form 6 is for new voter registration. Form 8 is for updating existing records — corrections, address shifting, PwD marking, and EPIC replacement.
