EPFO gives you five distinct ways to check your PF balance — each with different trade-offs. For most users, the passbook portal gives the full detailed history.
For on-the-go checks, the missed call (9966044425) or SMS (EPFOHO UAN ENG to 7738299899) routes work without internet or a smartphone — your latest balance arrives by SMS within seconds.
If you're checking shortly after joining a new employer, wait one full salary cycle. EPFO updates only after your employer files the first ECR for the new job — that takes 1–2 months on average.
Eligibility
- You hold a 12-digit UAN.

Common mistakes & rejection reasons
Checking balance too soon after joining
Why: EPFO updates the passbook after the employer files the ECR for each salary month. There is typically a 1–2 month lag.
Fix: Wait one full salary cycle after your joining date before expecting balance to appear.
Giving a missed call from a non-registered number
Why: The missed-call service (9966044425) identifies you by your calling number. A call from any other mobile gets no response.
Fix: Use the mobile number you registered with your employer when joining. If it changed, ask HR to update it.
Passbook shows 'not available'
Why: Passbook becomes available only after the employer files the first ECR. An error also appears if UAN is not fully seeded.
Fix: Wait 1–2 months after your first salary, then check again. If still unavailable, raise a grievance on epfigms.gov.in.
Balance visible in passbook but not matching expectation
Why: The passbook may not include the most recent 1–2 months. Additionally, the passbook shows employee + employer contributions; interest is credited annually.
Fix: Check the 'EPS' and 'EPF' columns separately. Annual interest appears as a credit in March/April each year.
UMANG shows different balance than passbook portal
Why: UMANG sometimes has a data refresh lag compared to the passbook portal. Both pull from the same EPFO backend, but UMANG may display cached data.
Fix: Use the passbook portal for the most current data when you need precision.
Special situations
Multiple Member IDs under one UAN▾
The passbook portal shows separate tabs for each Member ID. You must check all tabs to see total balance across all employers.
Old employer's Member ID not linked to UAN▾
If an old PF account is not linked to your current UAN, it won't appear on the passbook. Link it via 'Manage → One Member-One EPF Account' on the member portal.
Account marked as inactive or dormant▾
Inactive accounts still show on the passbook, but withdrawals from them may require manual processing at the EPFO regional office.
Employer contribution shows zero for a month▾
This may mean the employer did not file the ECR or the contribution was pending clearance. Follow up with HR and, if unresolved, raise a grievance.
Frequently asked questions
Which option shows the full history?▾
The EPF passbook portal — it shows monthly contribution-level data for every employer you've ever worked with.
Will the missed call cost me?▾
Standard mobile call rates apply, but it's a missed call — usually not charged.
Why is my passbook 'not available'?▾
Either your employer hasn't filed the first ECR yet, or your UAN isn't fully linked. Wait one full salary cycle, then check again.
Can I see my employer contribution + my contribution separately?▾
Yes. The passbook breaks down employee, employer, and EPS (pension) contributions for each month.
How often is the EPF passbook updated?▾
EPFO updates the passbook monthly after employers file the ECR challan. Typically there is a 1–2 month lag between contribution month and passbook update.
Can I download my EPF passbook as a PDF?▾
Yes. On the passbook portal, once logged in, you can download the passbook for each Member ID as a PDF — useful for loan applications or tax verification.
What does 'EPS' mean in the passbook?▾
EPS stands for Employees' Pension Scheme. A portion of the employer's contribution (8.33%) goes into EPS for pension. The passbook shows EPF and EPS columns separately.
Does the passbook show interest credited?▾
Yes. EPFO credits annual interest (notified each year by the government) as a passbook entry, usually in March or April. The interest rate has historically been around 8–8.5% per annum.
My UAN is active but I can't log into the passbook portal. What's wrong?▾
The passbook portal and member portal use the same UAN and password. If login fails, try 'Forgot Password' on the member portal. Password resets apply to both portals.
How do I know if my employer is depositing my PF contribution?▾
Check the passbook monthly. Each month should show an employee and employer contribution row. If a month is missing, ask HR — and raise a grievance on epfigms.gov.in if the issue persists.
Can I check PF balance for an old employer I left years ago?▾
Yes, if the old Member ID is linked under your UAN. Log in to the passbook portal and check each Member ID tab. If the old Member ID is missing, link it via the EPFO member portal.
What is the SMS number to check PF balance?▾
Send 'EPFOHO UAN ENG' to 7738299899 from your registered mobile number. Replace UAN with your 12-digit UAN and ENG with your preferred language code.
What information does the missed-call balance service return?▾
The return SMS from 9966044425 shows your UAN, last contribution month and amount, and total EPF balance. It does not show the detailed passbook history.
Is there a way to check PF balance through WhatsApp?▾
EPFO does not currently offer an official WhatsApp-based balance check. Use the missed call, SMS, passbook portal, or UMANG app instead.
What if the passbook portal is down?▾
EPFO portals occasionally undergo maintenance. Try the missed-call service (9966044425) or UMANG app as alternatives. Portal downtime is usually resolved within a few hours.
