Activation is the step that turns a generated UAN into something you can actually use. Until you activate, the UAN is just a number printed on your salary slip — you can’t log into the EPFO portal, view your passbook, file claims, or update your KYC.
Activation takes about five minutes and only needs your UAN, an identifier (Aadhaar, PAN, or Member ID), and your registered mobile number. Everything happens on one screen.
The most common reason activation fails is a mismatch between the details you enter and what EPFO has on record. If your activation fails repeatedly, the fix is almost always at your employer’s end — they need to correct your KYC on the employer portal first.
Eligibility
- Your employer has allotted you a 12-digit UAN.
- Your mobile number is registered with EPFO (the one given on Form 11).
- You have either your Aadhaar or PAN or your PF Member ID.
Required documents
Your 12-digit UAN
If you don’t know it, find it on your salary slip or use the ‘Know your UAN’ flow first.
Aadhaar / PAN / Member ID
Used to verify your identity during activation.
Registered mobile number
Required for OTP. Must match the number on your EPFO record.
Name and date of birth as per EPFO
Must match exactly — typos cause activation failure.
Step-by-step process

Enter UAN and personal details
Fill your 12-digit UAN, Aadhaar/PAN/Member ID, name, date of birth, and registered mobile number exactly as on EPFO records.
- 3
Solve the captcha and request OTP
Solve the captcha shown on screen, then click ‘Get Authorization PIN’. EPFO sends a 6-digit OTP to your registered mobile.
- 4
Verify OTP
Enter the OTP within the validity window (usually 5 minutes) and click ‘Validate OTP and Activate UAN’.
- 5
Receive password by SMS
On successful activation, EPFO sends a temporary password to your registered mobile. You can log in immediately with UAN + password.
- 6
Log in and change your password
Log into the member portal with your UAN and the SMS password. EPFO will prompt you to set a new password — choose a strong one (uppercase, lowercase, number, special character, 8-25 chars).

Common mistakes
- Trying to activate UAN with details that don’t match EPFO records. Even a different middle initial or DOB format will fail — fix the mismatch through your employer first.
- Using a mobile number that isn’t registered with EPFO. The OTP never arrives, and EPFO has no way to know which number to send it to.
- Treating activation as the same as ‘getting a UAN’. They’re separate — you must first have a UAN, then activate it.
- Sharing the SMS password and forgetting to change it on first login. The temporary password is a known security risk.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to activate UAN immediately after getting it?▾
Not technically — but you can’t check your PF balance, file claims, or update KYC online without an activated UAN. Most people activate it within the first month.
What if I don’t receive the OTP?▾
Confirm the mobile number registered with EPFO via your employer. If correct, wait 10 minutes and retry — SMS gateway delays do happen. If still nothing, ask your employer to update your mobile via the employer portal.
Can I activate UAN without Aadhaar?▾
Yes — PAN or your PF Member ID work as alternative identifiers. Aadhaar is, however, required to file most claims later, so link it as soon as possible.
I forgot my activated UAN password. What do I do?▾
Use ‘Forgot Password’ on the member portal login screen — it sends a reset OTP to your registered mobile.
